How can I change the existing 6'' recessed lighting to new 3'' recessed lighting instead?

Hi, I wanna change those big 6'' recessed lighting I have in the living room and kitchen in which it came with the house when I purchased it. I would like to get new ones 3'' or 4'' recessed lighting instead, without having to change the whole ceiling. Any suggestions on how this can be done? thanks in advance =)
