All sins are equal then..?

why is it that many Christians focus on certain sins (many that have no impact on anyone) and elevate these sins to certain damnation? I thought a sin was a sin and one was to repent their sins and even so you cannot be freed from all sins in life. If some sins are more profound then others and warrant damnation then was Jesus death conditional? His death only saved certain people from there sin and not others dependent on the sin? Why do Christians focus so much on certain sins when there are far more obvious sins that have lasting effects on the people around them?
